Fear is a perfectly natural defence. In fact it is one of the main reasons that humans became a dominant species on this planet. 

The human mind evolved with a fear mechanism, it’s called the amygdala. This fear centre warns us of impending danger so that we can take some kind of action to avoid that danger and stay alive. Scientists believe that most mammals have an amygdala, again for them to survive.

Here’s the thing though, a lot of scientists agree that we humans are born with only two fears, the fear of loud noises (which why we jump) and the fear of falling. All other fears are learnt fears, learnt as we are growing up. The fear of parents wroth, the fear of not being loved, the fear of exams, the fear of not being liked, the fear of height (even when we’re stood on a solid platform), the fear of public speaking, the fear of getting it wrong, fears of failure, fear of success, and I could go on.

Through our life’s experiences we can build a catalogue of fears, all of which hold us back from doing things, progressing and having a happier life. And it doesn’t always have to be a physical thing that causes our fear to rise, it is often caused by our own thinking.
